i bought a strip light for my pa's shop ,but the brown wire had came loose on the light , am i right in thinking the brown goes opposite the orange cable, and we are putting a plug on it ,5amp fuse and just plugging it in when required, not ideal i know, but needs must, when i do wire plug to strip light does the 3 core cable, live to live ,neutral to neutral and earth to light terminal, any thoughts on this appreciated, but not all negative please, as i have said, i know it's not ideal.

You say you bought this fitting and the brown wire was loose Take it back and get a new one
as for plugging light in your right its not Ideal but fuse it @3a not 5 and fit a stuffing gland to cable entry make sure cable isnt under strain inside this should be ok

There should be a terminal block for each of the 3 wires, live (line), neutral and earth (cpc) normally in the middle of the block. If the brown wire has come loose and no longer in the terminal, are the other 2? Process of elimination.

Without trying to sound negative, don't forget that if anything goes wrong with this fitting eg someone gets a shock, falls off the ceiling or it catches on fire. Will your dads insurance company pay out? Not a chance and this has no win no fee written all over it. Prime example of "get an electrician in". It won't cost much and it will be save for workers and customers alike.
