AP Electrical

I was speaking to a girl who works with the wife today, and she was telling me how when she brought her house she had an electrician in who tried ripping her off for £700, so I asked what had happened and this was the reply.
"We wanted a load of work done new cooker point, lighting and loads of other bits and pieces and this 'electrician turns up and says he cant do anything without fixing the earth as there is none (turns out she ment bonding) and there's other bits that he said wasnt right, - anyhow when he left we got another guy in who know how todo it, and he did it all for £200, and he never even mentioned the earth thing!!!!"

Dont know if the guy above had overpriced or not but stroll on, try do the job right and he looks like the crook!!!!

until they make it law that every house, flat etc has to have correct bonding and 30mA rcd upfront by a certain date this job is not going to be any easier

lol, People honestly arent bothered long as its cheap and " works" who cares,if she could smell gas bet she wouldnt have call odd job barry.
Cheap and works...too true. Installed an extra CU for a new shower today, replacing original secondary rewirable CU and 6mm T+E feeding original shower. Last week I found the cct had the hob jointed under the landing floor from choc connectors. The t****r who did it said 'What do you expect for £80'. Found that niether the shower or the hob were earthed (earth from feed left too short for connection in choc). On testing hob cct at 45amp switch, incomming, 2 screw terms, 3 out of 4 screws missing (none in live term). Changing switch tommorow. With bonding and shower fan, the total cost won't be far off a grand. £80......?

So which branch of the KGB is going to oversee this little gem.

You can only advise, you cant force people to have work done unless it’s subsidised.

this then opens the door for cowboys if the customers cannot be enforced to have the bonding done they then go for the 'cheaper option',
they all plead poverty when you give them the price saying they have no money to do it as they watch their 52 inch plasma or on play station with games at £50 a throw. what is the price of safety?

Think you just answered your own question there!!! lol!! But it is still not down to You or anybody else to lay down unenforceable laws. You cannot protect the world from the idiots that live in it. You can only do your best to inform them of the dangers. It's up to them, if they are going to take notice, or just go out and buy another 50 quid game!! lol!!

You already have the bonding rule for electricians, no or grossly under sized bonding conductors to the services then you can't conduct any work, unless it includes the provision of such bonding requirements... Your not going to get much else than that, ...Cowboys or no Cowboys...lol!!

Whichever way you look at it the majority of customer works on lowest price imo, and to them there getting the same end product i.e. a light that works etc..

If you follow the rules and play it straight down the line your going to loose jobs- how can you not,
In some respects barry down the pub has got it all figured out - no scheme, insurance, tax, van, test equip. the list goes on.
And how many guys down the pub get prosecuted each year for doing works without - notifying, upgrading bonding, testing, certificating the list goes on.
It keeps on coming round to the same conclusion imo, play it straight - struggle on, buy some spurs and become a cowboy happy carefree days :)

On the bonding issue.....has anyone ever heard of an incident resulting in death or injury which was directly attributed to inadequate bonding?....ie an earth fault causing electricution due to simultaneous contact with CP's and ECP's with no bonding present.......I cant say I ever have.
Does make me wonder if it's all a load of testicles sometimes, specially when I'm struggling to find a route through the laminate flooring and highly decorated walls......there are probably as many properties without bonding as with in the UK....the occupants seem to thrive regardless.
