Does any one agree with me that 90% of roofs require strenghtening. Due to the size of timbers in new builds and the 5 times rule for the size of fixings. IE battening roof trusers for decdent fixings,

No, all our jobs are assessed by a structural engineer and we've had to re-inforce about 7 - 10%. Our problems seem to be with 60 - 70's houses, the rest tend to be ok.

Just out of interest how much does a structural engineer cost you, also do they go out to each job or do you do a separate survey and take photos for them?

For the first 12 months we used an on site structural engineer who took ages to go to a property and even longer to send out a letter confirming that everything was ok (or advising what needed to be done to conform) and also cost quite a lot.

We learned a lot about the roof structures in our area through those 12 months and we now photograph, take measurements and email for structural assessment. It's a fraction of the cost, turned round in 24 hours and I get proper structural calcs to go in the handover pack. If we go to a job that we think there may be a problem with we would still get the local guy in to check it out but since we've used our online guy we've identified 2 jobs that need strengthening and the work has been done according to his revised plans.

Thanks - would you be able to PM me the details of your remote survey provider, if you don't mind? we have used one recommended by our NAPIT and I don't think the reports are very in depth, so it would be good to compare services.
