Looked pretty good.

I did a few 'staged' tests, and it really did seem to work

I cannot justify buying one, it's about steep. I'd never use it.

I got one of the Bosch green diy ones. Detects metal in walls that have got no metal in them!

Yeah that's my concern, I can imagine the cheap ones being more hassle than anything else.

The blue Bosch one seems ok though, about 70 quid.

I have one of these Bosch D-tect 120:
Bosch DTECT120 Radar Wall Scanner in carton

Uses the same detection technology as the more expensive 150, but without the fancy display or the need to move it along a straight line to build up a picture. Not had it long enough to be sure if it's any good, but it looks promising so far.

For the unlucky once or twice it may happen in your working life, that kind of money would be better in your pocket. If you did hit a water pipe you could get the wall reskimmed and decorated for less!! Stud detector sounds like a euphemism for a Sunderland lass!
