Any recommendations for a stud detector? Seen a couple on screwfix but the reviews put me off.. Basically I've got some stuff to do at home mounting stuff on walls etc and if I can find studs I can screw straight in minimal mess, I don't fancy coming home to find my tv on the floor... Failing that it's going to be a case of hole through plasterboard then sds into brickwork behind

what do some of the reviews say? if it's just to be used at home for a few jobs I wouldn't go overboard and buy an all singing all dancing. just get a middle of the road one and it'll surely do your job.
when you use it and it 'detects' a stud, I wouldn't take it as gospel anyway. always screw a small screw in first to check, then put your fixing in :wink5:

I think in fairness the reviews were more on the lines of it was finding 240v in glass which I find hard to believe, they were stanley ones about £20 ish that were on I might even nip to the big orange hut tomorrow shame I can't book one on a job can get away with other stuff

Certain items of tooling and test equipment I can book against a job at work if I need to do job, example I needed a new usb to serial for laptop and only certain ones guaranteed to work do went to rs booked it to job I don't think id get away with a stud detector as don't have use for repairing fire alarms and any install we do is all commercial so usually fixed to steelwork or in tubing

I would rather put the tv where I want it rather than where I could catch a stud. Align bracket where you want it, mark holes and the likely hood is you'll catch a stud with some of them.

for a big tv better find 2 studs
"catching some of them" is not going to work, you need at least 4 evenly distributed on both sides.

for finding - try with a small but strong magnet. should get a feeling of screws holding boards to the wood.
otherwise s 3mm drill bit and couple of pilot holes... if empty behind then not hard to fill up. will stay behind the tv anyway.

From what I have heard and read on here on other threads you get what you pay for with stud detectors, people often say they are more hassle and unreliable than they are worth.
