Stupid questions.

Hello there, as i said in my intro, i missed the first 4 months of my electrical installations nvq course so i have a couple of stupid questions to ask because they have never been clarified for me.

What is a short circuit?

What is a Distributors cut-out?

What is the difference between a Distribution board, Fuseboard and Consumer unit?

Thanks in advance, i feel like such a plonker but as i said i have never been taught this.

Why hasn't your college given you extra tuition to catch up/not let you on the course?

no idea, to pass students have to do loads of assessments and i missed about 5/6 of them so ive gotta do them all this coming week

there not hard ones, i know two of them is to wire a 1 way, 3 plate lighting circuit via 1.5 T&E and 2 way, 2 plate via 1.5 T&E fire tuff and multicore. Haha i=p/u i don't drink

Fault current flowing from Live to Neutral or live to earth
What is a Distributors cut-out?
The main incomming fuse
What is the difference between a Distribution board, Fuseboard and Consumer unit?
Basicly all the same, Correct terminolgy Consumer unit for domestic installations

Technically a short circuit is between Live conductors, between Live and Earth would be an earth fault.
A Distribution Board is an assembely of equipment in an enclosure containing various items such as switches, fuses MCBs etc.
A Fuse Board just contains fuses.
A Consumer Unit is a DB, that is type tested, and is for use by ordinary persons.

Check out part 2 (definitions) in your regs book (p20 onwards).
You should also have the onsite guide, and the electricians' guide to the building regs is a useful book.
Everything you need to know for the course should be in there.

The course pass mark is probably only around 50%, so you only need to know half of it to get the grade. A few days with your head in a book, and you'll be a qualified spark in no time.
