My mate reckons he has some work coming up in substations.
Someone else told me that you need 2 tickets to do this but not sure.
Does anybody know & if so what tickets do i need & where to get them & price etc.
Many thanks

Normally to undertake work within restricted access sub-station, you would need to be under the control and supervision of an ''Authorised Person'' or a ''Certified Person''.

Depends very much on what type of work you will be undertaking in the substation. You may need to under go ''Certified Person'' training. Been a long time since i've had any dealing within UK sub-stations, so i'll leave it to others here that do know, to confirm or otherwise... lol!!!

You will be under the supervision of at least a competent person. All work will be specified in a “scope of works”
A word of warning, treat everything as “live” unless proved otherwise. HV takes no prisoners!

I'm also a "person" on national grid sites. You need to 2 courses to get accreditation. You need to go to Eakring to undertake some safety and basic theory. You then go to a live substation for the BESC, (basic electrical safety certificate). You basically practice what you were taught at Eakring. it's a nightmare to get on the courses, and I only managed through a company that allowed me to add myself to their booking that they had paid for, and I paid them.

Haha!!... that's a new one for me!! ...What the Hell does a ''Person'' mean??

it basically means that i am allowed to work on any national grid substations, under the supervision of a comptent person, who is the person who will recieve the saftey document and the site workers register. The competent person along with the duty engineer/ SAP, will set out the demarcation cones, and the SAP will carry out all necessary switching on the HV side.

So your not an ''Authorised'' or a ''Certified'' Person then. ...Can you tell me what sort of work you undertake in these sub-stations.

By the way it's the Authorised Person that has the overall responsibility, and holds all the paperwork etc. He may deligate some of his routine responsibilities to a Certified Person.

As you say, these persons will undertake any and all switching of any MV/HV switchgear and make safe any cables by the use of earth switches or clamps etc.

I used to hate doing the switching for outside contractors. It would be done exactly the same as for our own guys, but the paperwork used get to me.
First time I did it for contractors I realised the CME notices didn’t have numbers on them, so I wrote the numbers on in indelible ink, they weren’t happy with that. Every thing they could find they made a song and dance about. The panel they were working on the incomer was earthed, the bus-bars earthed at the bus section and each outgoing feeder earthed, all VT’s isolated and locked. But still they moaned, I went and got the hot sticks and told them to lift the VT’s off each panel so I could get the probes in to the spouts. They didn’t fancy doing that so they got on with the job! All they had to do was clean out each VT riser and CT chamber and check the connections. They spun the job out from 8 hours to over 12 all at bank holiday rate. I finally got away 4 hours later after putting the system back to normal. I’d been there 20 hours!

Bloody contractors!

Sorry to bump this , i been working on the Subs for 10 years heres the deal.

You need both a BESC and persons card to work on the subs. You have to do the persons training before you can do the besc assessment

The persons card comes in 3 different types. Person, competent person and Senior authorised person. This training is classroom based and carried out by the natinal grid. It is simply a course that goes over all there safety rules ect

Persons card is the very basic one for any trade working on a sub. You work under the supervision of a Competent person. Card is valid for 3 years about ÂŁ180
Competent person card is for those that need to hold national grid safety documents. They are in charge of all other persons working under the safety document. Theres all sorts of other authorisations you can get on this card like live working ect.
To get this card you have to have previously held a persons card and provide proof of at least 9 days working on site. This card is valid for 1 year only. Cost ÂŁ275

Authorised person. Dont worry about getting this, unless you've worked for national grid you wont get it. This is the main guy that does the switching on the substaion. Always a NGC employee. This is the main man the guy that issues the safety docs ect

Besc.
This is an on site assessment. Half day course. You get asked questions you learnt on your persons course and asked to identify equipment ect. Cost ÂŁ175 valid for 3 years

Thought it might be of use as i know there's a few that are interested in this side of the trade
