I noticed yesterday that our Sunny Beam was briefly showing output of 3.89kW from our 3.99kWh installation. This morning I checked the data it had recorded and the highest was 3.09kW. I realise it only records every 10 minutes but does it record the output at the time of recording, or does it average it over the 10 minutes?

I assume it would just take a generation total every 10min

Eg.
1st reading. 12:00pm. 5020
2nd reading 12:10pm. 5220

5220 -5020 = 200W

200*6 = 1200W/hr or 1.2kWh

Thanks, but the reading I was referring to was the current (pun not intended) output rather than the accumulated output, ie it's showing an output of 1.12kW right now, with an accumulated output of 1.67kWh the day so far.

Th sunny beam will display an instantaneous spot value for power but will just record the total every 10 min and derive the power which is an average.

I think I have changed mine to update every 5 mins, its in the settings somewhere.

I've just realised that my poor wording of the question has confused things (sorry).

I should have said that it was the data the Sunny Beam downloads from the inverter that wasn't showing the highs that I had seen. Presumably, the inverter either only records instantaneous data every 10 minutes, or it averages over 10 minutes?

I'm pretty sure that the data in the spreadsheet (and also the graph) is based on the average data over a 5-10 minute span - but I can't find the document which made me think this at the moment.

The power reading on the inverter and the sunny beam i.e. the spot value, on the other hand is, I believe, the actual power rating sampled at a given time - however, I think the power is only sampled every minute or so, so it will not necessarily be the power right now, but the power from a spot sample in the last minute or so.

If I can find the document which made me think this, I'll post the link here.

I thought I had answered this one in the previous posts.

When you request historic data from the inverter all it provides is the e-total for each five minute time slot for the period you request.

From this you can work out how many watts have been generated since the start of the day to each timestamped e-total value. And the last five minutes by subtracting the e-total for the previous five minutes.

So this gives you five minute averages and explains why the spot values seen are higher.

The first example I gave shows how to work it back to an average kWh value based on 10 min interval.

You can see this when you wake the sunny beam, it shows the graph and total up to its last time slot. It then requests an up to date e-total from the inverter and you see the graph and total update.

Although I do like SMA, I think the sunny beam is really naff. I was reading my SMA book the other day, it referred to a release date of 2003 ! I have seen the replacement for this called the sunny view, it certainly looked better! Functionality etc not tested. It's apparently being released in June !

That is very cool. It would be the end user software that would make that the absolute king.
