supplys

hi everyone,

was asked the other day about main supply, the bloke is splitting his house into flats and wants to keep it on the one supply. he will then fit coin meters for each flat, both flats will have a electric cooker.

has anyone else seen this done before?

thanks

Hi mcm, cannot see a problem with this as long as service fuse is above 60Amp and obviously earthing & bonding is up to regs.

Could get fan assisted ovens installed in each flat to keep loading down.

Put in a landlords supply I.e distribution board for flat supply and hall and stair lighting and limit the load to the flats. He can always ask the DNO to upgrade his supply (I doubt he will)

its 100 amp main fuse but he said he was putting in electic hob and oven in one, the other electric oven and shower would you say that would be ok?

mcm, for me it would be a no, IMO too many items of heavy current use. you could have a scenario with 2 ovens, hob & shower on the go all at once. Add in a kettle and an iron you could be blowing service fuse.

You could use a 60Amp switch fuse for each flat but again with the loading you could be popping those, would advise your client to try and reduce loading on the installation.

Regards wa

Isn't it just a case of applying the diversity factors and checking the maximum load? I think the fact that it is two flats is a red herring!

Just as a side note a 100Amp BS1361 will take a current of 200Amps for 50 mins before blowing. Time for a cuppa?
