Hi all i need to get power to a shed at the back of my garden and was thinking of using 6mm 3core SWA however there is no fence that i can fix the cable to witch leaves me with a few other options suspending the cable witch i wouldn't not like to do because of various reasons, burying the cable, or laying the cable on the surface in the hedge line, i would like to have the cable beryed however because of the awkward configuration of the garden this would involve going through many walls and alot of digging so i was wondering if i could simply lay the cable on the ground under the hedge my family would know where the cable is so there would be no risk of it getting damaged by spades ect however what do the rules and regs say about doing this?

I am not a fully qualified electrician however all my work would be certified and inspected by a fully qualified electrician if we were to move in the future the cable would be coming with me so there is no danger or others no knowing about it being there.

Many Thanks

Rhys

Clipping to a fence is against regs. This is work that really should be done by a competent person. How will you be making the armoured ends of? With the correctly sized glands? Will it be correctly fused, what type of earthing system does the house have? TT TNCS TNS?

I'm sorry to put you down but if its going to be certified and inspected by a fully qualified electrician why haven't you asked his advice about how he wants the cable run etc. after all it his name on the certificate

sorry dont know what that means i know this question may seem stupid to most of you but i need to know soon and dont have a regs book to hand.

The fact that you don't know what those simple questions are means that you shouldn't be doing this type of work, I'm sorry but it isn't as simple as it sounds and I think that you should get a local electrician in

That is exactly why you need to get someone qualified to do this. Taking power outside can be an especially dangerous thing if you don't know what you are doing.

I never knew it was against regs to clip to a wall or fence i had seen it done before so assumed that was possibly a way of doing it, i was going to use 6mm 3core swa with size 20 glands. I would not be terminating this cable witch is why i would not know what to fuse it with i assume a 40a b type mcb, i have not asked the electricians advice as he is currently away and my dad who has a city and guilds is in the north sea.

and the reason i though possibly laying it on the ground under the hedge was because i saw a thread earlier where someone was checking if there electrician was doing right or not he was laying it down near the hedge and a few people said it would be an ok thing to do so just though i would check

in my experience it perfectly acceptable to clip to a fence thats sturdy and a permanent structure and the cable is suitably protected and visible.
so either im a cowboy or just realistic in my approach to getting the job done.
dont answer that.
:)
