Hi peeps i need your advices and skills.
i went to a flat that was surposed to have a full rewire but when i went to have a look. It had what looks like a couple of switches still got old cables and nearley every socket has one cable coming from it. i know you can spur off a sockett but this is nearly every one and some sockets that are a ring main are old cables. This dosent seem right.
Can you use old colour cables ie red live black neutral t+e in any part of a domestic installation and before you ask this isnt my work just called in to check it. This house is in a state but not 100% sure whats aload.

many thanks

Why do you / the owner think its had a rewire?

Can you contact the person who did this rewire
Their name and scheme membership Number will be on the certificate that goes with the work if it was major electrical work

If every socket has only one cable chances are they're fed from jb's somewhere, is this definately a rewire? If it is it sounds like a proper diy lash up!

sorry for not being clear, but landlord asked me to have a look at what a company carried out and he wasent happy with the job stateing that i asked for a full rewire and i have old cables in switches and nearly all the socketts with one cable coming out of the box. I said it dosent look right to me and noted all the faults. it does look like they have used jb but some sockets that are in a ring the cables havent been changed and the cooker cct has old colour cables hanign out of the box.
i know this isnt a full rewire but is there any reg stating no use of old cables and i know you can spur off a ring but every sockett?

Yeah it sounds like all the legs to the sockets come off JBs. I could be that there is a ring and all the sockets 'spider off' it.
It's not how I would have done it but whoever did it can probably come up with an excuse why they've done it like that.
There's no reg which says you can't use old cable, just that a suitable warning sticker should be put on the CU stating that different colours are used in the installation.

Perhaps they rewired by recycling, they were probably thinking of the environment by reusing old cables and keeping their carbon footprint down below the permissible level, Max CF (carbon footprint) = R1 (rewire) +or- R2 (recycled materials) X any correction factors (SS) such as reusing old switches and sockets

Yes. But would that be below 0.05Ω?

Sorry. Wrong thread!!

If every socket is a spur off the ring via a JB, surely this isn't allowed nowadays as the no. of spurs can't exceed the no.of sockets on the ring. And yes you could use old coloured cable, but it should be sleeved brown/blue, and I wouldn't be happy seeing a rewire done using it. Additions maybe, but not a new circuit or rewire!
