My parents have moved in to a new house which has a 2.5 cable taken from a socket in the kitchen and run down the garage in to a small 2way garage CU (2 lights and 3 sockets). The distance from the house is around 75 meters, now I know that this needs replacing and to do so I will need to change the CU in the house and then run SWA down to the CU in the garage but I am trying to work out the cable size. I think maybe 4mil would do but would a 6mil SWA be a better one to go for?
The garage is just for storage, lights every now and then, fridge and freezer always on.
Many thanks for reading.

The distance from the house is around 75 meters, now I know that this needs replacing and to do so I will need to change the CU in the house No the CU in the house may not need changing, you will need to assess what you have in the house and design the new installation accordingly

and then run SWA down to the CU in the garage but I am trying to work out the cable size. I think maybe 4mil would do but would a 6mil SWA be a better one to go for? 75 metres is a long way and unfortunately because your wanting lights in the garage you are subject to very tight parameters regarding volt drop, which for lighting is 3%. I'm pretty sure though that my last sentence will have confused you even more sorry.

Hi and welcome to the forum

As you see from my brief comments though not a difficult thing to do to get power/lights to your garage. there are quite a few conditions you need to take into account. This is before we go down notifying the installation to the council if your in England and Wales.

I admire you for wanting to come on here and ask, you did the right thing, but I would highly recommend you getting help on your project. You will be surprised on how reasonable the cost is, you can off set costs by digging the trench and with an electrician guiding you and telling you how he wants things done, you can save his time and your costs.

I advise if you want to post your general location and i'm sure one of the lads would gladly pop round and advise you

Thanks, I am in SW London, I was planning on a clip direct mannor along the fence for the run, the reason for the change of CU was due to an old style fuse board with bsen 3036 fuses, the main cost I think will be the coast of the cable.
