Hi, I'm in the process of landscaping my garden. So now is a good time to lay a supply to my garden shed. I was wondering what size SWA cable I need. The cable will be burried. It will be a 50 metre runand a maximum load of a 3000watts ( a light or 2 and a drill or small table saw etc maybe 3kw is a bit OT but rather have too much than too less!)

I used the TLC cable selector guide and it said 2.5mm. Now I have a background in electronics and understand voltage drop etc to a certain degree and wondered is 2.5 correct?

Thanks in advance

You need to allow a maximum volt drop of 3% as your circuit includes lighting...which is 6.9v......a 2.5mm SWA will give you a volt drop of 13.3v if you allow a load of 14a.
I calculate a 6.0mm will give a volt drop of 5.5v...which will leave a bit of leeway for your final circuits.

Remember if you propose doing this work yourself it will come under part P,and building control will have to be informed.

:iagree: Go on WP your itching to ask..............................earthing system is?

Everything WP as highlighted just can add that the 6mm is good advice as once you dug a 50 mt trench you only want to do it once, so you want to lay a cable that will cover all eventualities now and in the future
