Hi all. Was on a job on 2 blocks of flats yesterday sorting out a so called new install on communal and outside lights. Customer was unable to recall original sparky who did the work, when the outside lights circuit was energised the RCBO operated. After plenty of ladder work incorrect polarity of 3 core SWA was rectified!

Here is my point though. None of the SWA terminations had banjos fitted. At the CU there is a self tapper driven through the top surface of the metal CU which is then directly terminated into the earth terminal. I can't see that this is satisfactory, especially over the long term, as the screw isn't adequately fastened/secured to the casing, just driven in. What do you guys think and have you come accross this before? Thanks in advance.

The SWA should still have banjo's as it is an extraneous conductive part. Sometimes banjos can be difficult to fit but Ive started using Piranha earth nuts recently as they go inside the accessory.

It's not an Extraneous-Conductive-Part as it forms part of an electrical installation. It's an Exposed-Conductive-Part.

Have a read of Definitions in Part 2 of BS7671:2008.
