SWA outer sheath damage

Have been asked to connect a SWA supply into a garage. The cable was ran in before I even knew about the job. No ducting as it enters the garage, been concrete poured round it as well. Then to top it off the joiner has fixed a stick to the concrete putting pressure on the cable. I’ve done IR & everything is fine. Don’t know how I feel about connecting it though. Have had to cut away some of the wood to free it up a bit. Thoughts? Pictures below.

I wouldn't put my name to that. Moisture will get into it.

I reckon dig out and joint a new piece on personally.

I'd worry about what state the rest of it is in if this is what it's like on the bit you can see - if able to repair that part with a proper joint I'd be noted on cert that rest of the cable is nothing to do with me.

Well, that's not what I expected, I thought it's going to just be a bit of damage to the sheath, and applying some adhesive lined heatshrink with good overlength would be fine... but...

FFS indeed! As above, really it ought to be fixed.

If it has to be used for reasons of time-scale or shear tightwaddeness then if it is 3C and glanded both ends (so the armour continuity is not essential), and passes IR without a squeak of leaking, then it is probably going to be OK for a good few years.

But for certain I would get the condition noted and the lack of warranty agreed in writing first!

EDIT: I always though SWA should never be concreted in the first place?

That's more than just a bit of a scuff. Wouldn't be happy with that and that section needs replacing.

It's ok to embed SWA in concrete, at least prysmian and doncaster's are anyway

Useful to know. Just it seems wrong to me, get a cracked bit of concrete and seems it would shear the cable. Still, I'm sure the manufacturer's know more about this then me!

Still would go with duct, as cable can be replaced (usually) if needed and a small shear would damage duct but not loose cable within it.
