Mr Mike

For many years, I have refered to SWA as Steel Wire Armour.
I have been told the correct terminology is Single Wire Armour.
May I ask for your thoughts please.

iv'e always called it steel wire armour as well. where did you get the single from?

Mike could someone be thinking of Single core SWA and just getting terminologies mixed up. Like the other lads it's always been Steel Wired Armour as AWA was Aluminium Wired Armour

I will deffo ask the question when I see him next. I know he is about tomorrow Tuesday.
So I will report back. Thank you Gents.

Good job you lot don’t work on old cables used in mines and quarries:

SWA Single Wire Armoured (under M&Q regs some armouring could be copper to bring the earth up to 50%)
DWA Double Wire Armoured
TWA Triple Wire Armoured (only ever came across one of these)
PILCSWA Paper insulated Lead Covered Single Wire Armoured
PILCDWA Paper insulated Lead Covered Double Wire Armoured
PILCTA Paper insulated Lead Covered Tape Armoured

Don’t confuse the tape armoured with modern aluminium tape armouring, it was evil steel tape about 2” wide wound around the inner serving on a ½ overlap. I don’t think I ever made one off without slashing the end of a finger open! Thank god we didn’t come across them very often.
