i cannot get 5 core S.W.A in time,is there a Reg. preventing me from doing this. :rolleyes2:

Thanks in advance:- steve.b

can't see any problems as long as it's correctly glanded and doesn't require steel armour.

SY Control Flexible Cable BS6500, VDE0250

SY Cables are not suitable for direct connection to the public mains

All I can say is that in the past I have used SY cable for all sorts of applications and jobs, but I designed some circuits a few years back using single/3 phase sockets and the company engineer rejected the use of SY on this basis, and pointed out this technical brochure

Doesn't really make sense, though, does it? OK, not suitable for 'direct connection' (yet no mention of the same for YY) but has 300/500v rating. So, are we suggesting that it's fine for use at 230/415 but only so long as it's come from a private supply??!

but it's not connected directly. it's connected via a dis. board, switch, fuses, etc.

Totally agree RI as I said I have used SY for loads of commercial/industrial applications, until I put my proposal in and it got rejected, and that was the evidence supplied by the engineer.

All I was trying to point out in the most unlikeliest event of anything happening, with this information available, you could be on a sticky wicket.

By the way mate are you still over here or back in blightly

I see your point Malcolm, but why the voltage rating?

BS6500
is a British Standard, which was last updated in 2000. It stipulates requirements for the construction, dimensions and properties of insulated flexible cables with voltage ratings up to 300V/500V. This standard applies to SY Cable and other cables used with appliances and equipment in domestic or similar environments.

I'm cold and wet. Does that answer your question?

When is 'direct' connection, not direct?! Anything downstream of the DNO bullet is 'a system' effectively, and even if you plugged into the head it's still fuse protected (albeit not the right rating for the cc)
