I was at a factory job today where they had used sy flex for some lighting circuits and had earthed the braiding by untwisting the braiding then twisting it back like normal wire, earth sleeved it and connected to earth

What are ppl thought because when i brought it up they stated ' well when we make inspection pits we dont earth it at all so its a better job than normal its not needed'

Is it ok to terminate like this ?

on sy cable you would not normally see the braiding earthed as is normally used as a rough service cable etc. My own thought is the braid should be earthed at one end at least to provide a screen in case of damage. Never seen this cable used for lighting though only usually for temp hook up's etc.
So as rob2 says better than nothing

This is how we terminate SY at the company I work. Yes you can get correct SY glands but we just put it through a stuffing gland and connect the braid to earth. A lot of the AHU's we work on the motors come pre wired from the factory in SY and this is done the same way. We also wire the lighting circuit in SY cable. We can only do as we are told to install it.

The braiding is designed as a screen for its original design as a control cable... if utilised as a power cable then the screen must be earthed at the supply end as a minimum and not used as an earth thus a seperate earth core should be present, there are many threads on this if you search.

Just to add with regards to the above post. Yes we never use the braid as an earth as the SY always has an earth core. There installed from an inverter to the motors which is why they have to be screened I believe.

That's a very good point, to make. The braiding of SY cables does NOT comply with a circuits CPC requirements!! As it's primarily a control wiring cable, the braiding is there for screening purposes.

Also worth pointing out, many of the manufacturers of this cable state quite clearly '' Not suitable for use as building power supply wiring''!!

I have regularly seen larger size SY cables (10mm - 35mm) used as fly leads from gen sets at shows and events and personally thought that it looked more suitable than the thick rubber fly leads that you also see , i have always assumed that they have carried a integral cpc as well as using the braid having said that .
Just goes to show , always check the manufactures instructions .

From previous threads i also quoted that many manufacturers do state this but not all and its really down to the braiding issue as their YY range wihout braid hasn't got these restrictions ... i believe they are trying to cover there backs pretty much in the same way nut manufacturers put contains nut on their bags of peanuts... because there's always some stupid sod gonna get killed and a barmy lawsuit hits the manufaturer because common sense shouldn't be taken for granted.
