Tails greater than 3m length..

Hi all,

I know tails are meant to be less than 3 metres in length and if not then a switch fuse needs to be installed.

What's the situation when the tails from a flat go from a communal hallway then into the consumer unit? (Approx 5m)

Do you just put a switch fuse next to the meter? (The run goes through the loft space)

The 3m rule is a DNO requirement, and normally results in a KMF or S/F being fitted.

It does not negate any need for RCD or mechanical protection if needed.

Eon are fitting an isolator on Friday so could I get them to fit a switch fuse instead?

It has nothing to do with mechanical protection as I was informed the other day

Mechanical protection is the regs, if it passes thro walls and floors or burried then it needs mechanical protection or RCD

Sorry HT but may I correct one part of that...... Any cable going through a wall or ceiling and not embedded in the wall or ceiling does not need rcd or mechanical protection.

Distance is a DNO requirement and is generally 3 to 5 metres. Then you require a switch fuse...

Plastic tubing IS a mechanical protection. Tails still need to be insulated and sheathed, as far as i'm aware!! SWA would also conform to to being insulated and sheathed, as well as providing improved mechanical protection....
