The Government is unlawfully using late-payment penalty fines against tens of thousands of small firms who do not file their tax returns on time as a "cash-generating scheme" for the Exchequer.

"To intentionally allow, and target small firms to accrue fines when it is making deals with larger firms that owe millions of pounds is immoral."

This type of thing has been going on since King John in 1199!

They got away with it then and they get away with it now. The little may have scored a solitary victory, trouble is, eventually he will have his head removed!!!

Whats the issue??

The HMRC deadlines are well publicised and Finance directors and Sole Traders know when they are.

Companies, like people need to take responsibility for what they need to do. Blaming other is not going to help

Its nice to know vodaphone appreciate me helping to pay their tax

Custom's are the only government department who have a permanment warrant to enter your premises, even the police have to apply to a magistrate for one to enter your house.

While I agree with the comment about deadlines being well publicised it still rankles that a small operator gets proportionately screwed while someone like Vince Cable gets a smack on the wrist for "forgetting" about large slices of income
