I just started to test a new installation. I wired all the flats and am confident the the ring is indeed a ring. I have done continuity tests to check there are no open circuits.
My question do I need to do an R1 + R2 tests. and is it possible to determine the r1 + r2 by adding zs to ze on the ring or does this bring up a different figure

i think u need to do r1+rr2 in the test schedule and i think im right in saying u can add r1+r2 to Ze to get your Zs for tht circuit

You cannot calculate R1+R2 using the formula (R1+R2) = Zs-Ze, as when measuring Zs the parallel paths via any protective bonding will be included and therefore will not be a true reflection of R1+R2.

why are u even asking this....................................to comply with bs7671 u have to test the ring, to confirm polarity(which u said u did), and all readings are what should be expected?

Also it will show a higher figure if u are measuring a spur, if u have any on the ring.??? The R1+R2 test will prove that all readings are the same if the skts are indeed in the ring (terminals are not loose etc) and that u do not have any crossed polarity on any of the sockets (ie live in the N connection at skt plate)

Thanks I think I just stick to the correct method, Just haven't done any testing for years and was looking for a way to speed things up.
R1 +r2 It is then thanks everyone. Newbe

r1, rn, r2 followed by R1 + R2 followed by IR all before the circuit is energised.

Testing should not be "speeded up" it takes as long as it takes end off.

i am amazed at how many sparks get confused between R1 and r1 etc. can't all be put down to typos

I'm getting concerned with everything I'm reading just lately, I knew there was a lack of trained people out there, but this forum brings the problem more in the open.

Asking simple questions on basic testing, omg
