Hi all

I am new to testing so need some advice.

I have installed a low voltage bathroom fan and would like to know do i have to test the whole lighting circuit it is attached to or just the the cable i have installed for the fan.

also should i bypass the transformer when testing to avoid incorrect readings. resistance etc.

thanks

Are you talking of an ELV fan? A 230v fan is LV.
I'd be tempted to carry out a full IR test on the cabling you've installed with all sensitive equipment disconnected then carry out an IR test of the whole circuit with L&N (connected together) to E.

If you look at the notes concerning the MEIWC on page 336 of the regs you will see the very last sentence states

Appropriate inspection and testing, however should always be carried out irrespective of the extent of the work undertaken"

Now only you will be able to deem whether and what is appropriate, and to test the existing installation or just the part you did. If the existing circuit has RCD protection and your just adding a fan then perhaps no, you would only test the part you did

If the existing installation is 60 yr old, has no RCD protection, which you will now have to give to that circuit and is VIR cable then yes I would definitely be testing it.
