the RCD manufacturers will tell you to take the rcd out of the circuit before testing.

I do take them out if I notice them. If testing a whole board and there is a RCD i tend to switch it off and also leave the mcb's off when testing, it does mean that I cant test the whol einstallation at once but for the sake of a few extra IR tests it is no big deal and it gives a better feel for the state of the installation. If in doubt I only do a 250v test and connect L and N together anyway (especially if other sensitive equip on the cct.
