Do not forget how many people EDF have working in DECC. In my opinion, this is corruption and subversion of the worst kind.
The Carbon Price Floor was introduced to give a hidden subsidy to the Nuclear Industry. At its current level it is nowhere near high enough to make new stations economic. There is already a risk to industry through higher energy costs as it is set at a higher rate than the rest of Europe. If there was a Europe wide agreement on a higher rate this would mean a level playing field. How ever much it is increased, it is unlikely to lead to Nukes being built without further subsidy. The irony is the more the price floor is increased, the more attractive renewables become.
Despite all of this energy prices will increase substantially in the next twelve months. Coal fired stations will start to close due to running out of EU permitted hours, leading to an increased use of gas for generation. At the same time shipments of LNG from the middle east are likely to head to Asia rather than the UK due to higher prices and demand. 25% of our gas now comes in this way. There is only one way prices are going in the coming years as energy demand from the BRIC nations and other developing economies increases. This takes no account of the risks of political instability in supplier regions
Energy is going to cost more whatever happens. This is why renewables is a no brainer for anyone without vested interests in Nukes or fossil fuels. There is exciting work in progress to develop energy storage systems that will lead to the intermittent nature of some renewables being overcome, meaning their generation can be used for baseload. Rather than spend Billions on unproven technologies like Carbon Capture and Storage, the same money could be poured in to Compressed Air energy Storage and other technologies under development.
There can be a secure low carbon energy future, but in my opinion it should not come from Nukes.
