Please forgive me if thread has already been answered elsewhere, but I am new to the forum. Does anyone have a solution to thermal insulation being put over downlights in a new build. As the insulation needs to be continuous and not broken. I have seen Jcc insulation guards but are expensive, I have 108 lights to fit in a new house and cost is prohibitive. Any suggestions. Please.

Make a box section of plaster board, stick it together with plaster, then cut vent holes in the sides
Use more expensive fireproof materials depending on the depth of your pocket

On the other hand, the people installing the installation have responsibility to other services fitted,so in effect, if they were ok when you fitted them, tell the people fitting the insulation they have problems not you

Thanks Des is it necessary to stick together with plaster or is there another way?

dont shoot me down on this one, but im sure i've heard in the past that an upturned clay flowerpot  is a cheap alternative to keep insulation off. i havent done it personally and it sounds hilarious i know but you can kinda see the merit in it.

Unfortunately the plastic board ceiling is not in yet, and not sure how to support under floorboards.

That really is not your problem if it's new build, have you priced for this ?
If you have'nt and they issist you do it ask for a site instruction or variation or order to cover the works use JCC stick 15% on plus your labour

Many thanks everone, as I am already using fire rated downlights , I will use two battens each side of the joist and a bit of plasterboard as support to keep off the insulation from the top of the downlight.

interesting one i heard (on here I think) was to use plastic drain pipe about 100mm diameter cut into sections as deep as the insulation is going to be and use them over the downlighters in the loft..
The insulation can go round the open tops of the pipe then, and the lights can "vent" upwards without problems..
