Whats going on with that underfloor heat mat? I've only ever tiled over it but it looks like its been left exposed under whatever the floor covering is?

It's a type that's specially designed to go underneath carpet (proper thick carpet & underlay job). On three occasions at three separate houses (that we have remedied anyway) the join between the heated part (not entirely sure of it's proper name, possibly element?!) and the cable has burnt out due to a short or possibly a loose connection. In 2 of the 3 properties this part was situated in a place that has had no furniture on it or foot traffic!

Strange isn't it? might have been a bad batch of mats or bad installation, just googled it and looks like they recommend only using certain tog carpets so maybe the thick carpet and underlay is killing them off! if it keeps you in remedials then who's worrying

Yeah it's keeping us in remedials but still worrying if there wasn't someone about at the time to see the smouldering hole in the carpet!

serves them right for being such wimps heating underfloor carpets. whatever next... hot water showers?

The last photo, the socket is fine. It is 30cm away from the basin of the sink. Looks rubbish, it looks wrong and we would never do it but it is ok within the regs although the expensive tap head can acutely touch it, but hay, its not in the reg (as such... Suitable for use in the location.... NOT)

Heat mat under the carper???? Just wear slippers!

I agree with Paul m on the socket near sink. Totally acceptable as far as regs is concerned but not best practice in reality

It's the tap that makes me laugh. A water outlet can touch an electrical outlet!!!! That socket now needs to be an IP65 socket  That will look nice in that kitchen?

In regards to the socket, is there anything in the regs that says about this? I thought the 300mm from the sink was written in the Electricians guide to the building regulations?

Either way i think common sense is the key here. I would not have installed a socket in that position to be honest.

I'm sure I saw it in the regs today. Ill have a look tommorow and give you the reg no. I'm in bed at the mo so I can't be bothered going downstairs!
