I'm thinking of taking my 2391 but i not long finished my apprenticeship so just wondered if i shud gain more experiences before i pay out the money for it. Thanks

Hang fire before you part with the readies. I am not saying don't go for the 2391, but give yourself the best possible chance of passing it. Buy GN3 now and start to study and understand it in great depth. And i mean in great depth until you can recite it, get used to all the terminology used, and learn all the specification for the test instruments and so on. Also get plenty of practice in with the test methods. Once you have got all that in your head, then pay for the 2391, and spend the days and nights continuing to read and digest GN3 until the day of your exam. Then you will be ready for the course and exam.

The 2391 isn't a difficult course or exam as long as you are well prepared. it has a high failure rate because most people like me turn up, do the course, and then realise that they have no chance in a closed book exam because of lack of prep time. I was lucky and had 5 weeks between course and written exam and passed, but 5 weeks is not long enough. 5 months would be better.

So in a nutshell do as i have advised, and no doubt others will also give you the benefit of their wisdom on this as well, and you will have no problems with the 2391.

Cheers...........Howard

I recommend ex-apprentices get 2-3 years experience first, with a good mix of domestic, commercial and industrial during that period. I also echo SirKits comments above.

I did the 2391 straight away in the september after completing my apprenticeship. Needless to say though that I felt confident in my self and had gained a lot of experience by then.

i thought apprentices did your 2391 as part of your apprenticeship as well as 17th edition is that not right

No it isn't

Thats me

When i passed all the city and guilds i applied for the 17th edition and just missed out on a place however my teacher said i have a space on 2391 for you.At first i thought no way i want to work as a spark for 5yrs or so first..He said i would find it easier now as i have a lot off knowledge fresh in my mind..
Most of the people who fail have been away from college for a number of years..
I passed first time and it didn't come easy i was reading GN3 on the tube going to and from work,at break time and doing a lot of past papers..Have seen my teacher since and the next 2 classes after mine had 35% pass rate..He now wants to make an entrance test for people signing up for the course as this is reflecting badly on him..
I would sign up for the course in sept and if you put the effort in you should be ok...
Good luck to you...

Hi,

I think its down to the individual. If you believe you have the practical skill and knowledge to pass the 2391, then go for it. Before I did it, I was only testing domestic, very rarely comercial or industrial. I did alot of swating up though. Like Sirkit Breaker says, GN3 is like the bible when it comes to knowledge for the 2391 but you do need at least some practical experiance. When I left college, I had the practical side of it but not the knowledge.

Get your head in the GN3, sleep with it, take it with you everywere, tell your partner or mum to read it to you as a bed time story, give a pet name and have a go at some past papers and see what you get. If you reckon you get about 80% right, take the 2391. This is only my opinion but if you decide to do it, good luck.
