O

Octopus

So I rolled up to add a new circuit to a very new board with a few spare MCB's in it - a nice and easy Friday job I thought....

and when I'd dropped in to look at the job previously I'd looked at the MET...

The cupboard was pretty fun but by the look of the board and the nice clean GY I wasn't anticipating any issues until the cupboard was clear and I noticed .....

So a quick Ze had my alarm bells ring - my trusty tester wouldn't perform one!

So I inspected a bit closer...

Well that goes to the water and up to the board, and it would reach to the board too without the joint!

A quick look at the meter etc:

Those boards are both off and have G's back to the met....

GY to the gas outside.

Now this isn't a TT, so I'm guessing its not had an earth for quite a while - possibly since the 1930's when it was built.

How can people sleep at night, installing replacement boards without even a test for an earth??

So I made calls to EON, Seeboard, EDF and UK Power Networks and someone will come out soon

Watch this space and I'm not looking forward to my next mobile bill with all the 0800's I've called today!

I feel for you mate. For sheer hassle factor, we must have one of the worst jobs.
That said, my wife and I did a day and a half's work for an elderly couple earlier in the week and they were so chuffed that as well as paying the agreed amount, they bought us a bottle of wine :)

looks like a tns / pilc cable with the earth strap missing to me.
they got economy 7 heating as well ? cos that type of cutout is usually limited to 60a , its certainly not a 100a service.
first pic made me laff , just 1 measily t&e clipped.
looks like a diy job ;-)

Nothing switched on, on the E7 board and judging by the look on the clients face they've been switched off for a long time!

I quite like jobs like this, customer more than happy for me to sort it out..... once UK PN have done their bit!

13 way at a guess (+ 4 ways taken upby the RCDs).

Actually its a 16 way + 2 RCDs and main switch! Just looked at the photo of it I have without the cover on and there appears to be 1 core of very old cable in there - must remeber to take a closer look when I go back
