Been to customers tonight and one of the jobs on the list is...

Disconnect shed supply, shed coming down then reinstate when new shed built.

Currently supply is 2.5t+e spured from 32a mcb which also has a ring in there, all protected by 30ma RCD.

Cable is supported outside at high level with catenery wire.

All that is going in shed is 1 x socket, 1 light + switch. Cable run is approx 10m.

There are no spare ways in consumer unit to put it on it's own 16/20a MCB, and it's a right nightmare (no room all boxed in!) to split tails and add additonal RCD unit.

So not ideal and not the wayI'd like to it, but can it go back to how it was when I disconnected it - spured off 32a mcb with ring ?

Many Thanks,

Sy

doubt it you won't have overcurrent protection on the 2.5

i normally use swa with steel catenary wires-just the way i was trained

if memory serves T&E not suitable for outside, nym suitable for outside but not direct sunlight

Yeah not great and wouldnt personally use T+E out of choice. But it is well supported, not sure on sun light thing though. Checked on this before when doing PIR on another job and I picked it up T+E outside... but sure I didnt have to code it ?

Where it leaves the house, put in an IP box with a basic RCD set up, could be an IP rated spur, and run appropriate flex/ hi-tuf to shed on existing catenary. Cables from house to outside should also be rated for indoors breaker. tri rated could provide an solution if space is limited as current rating is higher than other singles of same CSA. If you need short bits pm me. Don't forget to protect cables through walls. Hope this helps

T & E definite no no used outside. It goes hard and degrades with our climate. not sure if it is a non compliance, my guess it is, but whether or not i still dont do it.

Just to throw the cat amongst the pidgeons.
The OSG says in appendix 3 page 106 table 3A applications of cable for fixed wiring.
Flat PVC BS6004 ie T+E cable uses include "on exterior surface walls, boundry walls and the like." "For use as overhead wiring between building."
It does also comment that "Protection from direct sunlight may be necessary."
So can it be used or can't it?? Your thoughts please.
My opinion I won't use it outdoors.

Plain answer is no T+E was not designed to be placed outside as it is not been constructed for that environment ie extreme heat/cold and UV damage.

There is not a problem here the customer may want same as but you have to tell him it did not comply before the installation was upgraded and it sure as hell does not now
ie 2.5mm spur protected by a 32A in a house yep ok but shooting off externaly no.

Also if he is going to the expense of rebuilding the shed he is going to have to do the electrics right and if not tell him it will affect the resale value of the house

Forgot to add that you could loose your card for doing a job like this anyway

Explained to customer what was invloved in completing this job the correct way and they were not happy with the extra cost.

So told them (to stick it!!) they'd have to try and find someone (cowboy) else to do it....

See ya

:D

A bit of advise no matter how bad the customer is dont tell them to stick it as I said give them the facts tell them you have to stick to the regs and who knows they may
get back to you.

I used to get customers moan at me about paying (at the time) £30 to service their alarm system and at the same time they had a brand new £15k car in the drive. Yes we know they dont like paying out for something they dont understand but keep your standards up and dont go to the cowboy mentality.

Well I did try to make them aware of why it would cost more, to bring it up to standard and complying with the current regs ... but it didnt seem to bother them, they would rather save the extra £200 and try and get someone else in.

Oh well nevermind thank you everyone for all your advice anyway:)
