What do you mean...you were told to choose? Theres regulations next to the points mate...im not really sure what you're asking here to be perfectly honest.

3.6 is 544.2.1 in the regs.
3.7 is 543.3.2 &544.1.2
3.8 is 543.3.2

but it says this on the EICR inspection schedule anyway. For what its worth, you've got it correct.

If a main bonding conductor is missing, then 3.6, nothing more.
If there are main bonding conductors, and you cannot access the connections to the pipework, then 3.7, but you wouldn't tick it just for a missing conductor.
3.8 is really refering to supplementary bonding conductors elswhere in the installation, such as in the bathroom.

So if I have an installation where the main bonding conductor is unable to be located I would code 2 the 3.6 box and lim the other boxes

No.
If there is a gas bond, but no water, you would place a X in 3.6.
You would then check out the connections for the gas bond, and would either tick or X box 3.7.
Then you would look for the presence of supplementary bonding conductors (6.4) and if present either tick or X box 3.8.

If there is no gas supply, then you would put N/A in box 3.7.

If there is no supplementary bonding, again it would be N/A in box 3.8.
