looked at an installation today its a tns 60amp supply with 16amp tails & 10mm main earth.
main protective bonding of water and oil is 10mm.

take it main earth needs upgrading to 16mm?

No, the existing 10mm is fine on a TN-S

In all liklehood it would also be fine if it was any one of the three major earthing systems in use in the UK.

Protective conductors can EITHER be calculated via the adiabatic equation (543.1.3) OR sized in accordance with 543.1.4 and table 54.7.

The latter would tell you it needs to be 16mm2 but the former would more than likely assure you that the installed 10mm2 conductor is just fine.

I was talking about Protective Conductors, as the OP mentioned 'main earth', not Protective Bonding Conductors which are a different matter
