I have looked at an installation which has a MK sentry mcb consumer unit. Consumer unit and wiring all in good condition being only 15 years old.
The consumer unit is mounted at ceiling height above kitchen wall units.
Following a survey the customer has received a quote to replace a none regulation fan above the bath,
replace a none regulation light above the bath, remove a light pull switch above the bath and replace the consumer unit with a 17th edition rcd protected consumer unit.

Customer is an elderly lady and does not want cost for jobs which do not need to be done and has asked me to quote for the lesser job as follows:

Do not replace the consumer unit.
Remove the fan from above the bath but board over and do not fit replacement. (bathroom does have opening window)
Replace the light above the bath with a bathroom light.
Remove the light pull switch above the bath.

Question is - If i fit RCBO on the light circuit because of work in bathroom, all lights will be on same circuit and nuisance tripping maybe a problem when bulbs go etc.
The elderly customer is small and a little frail and is more at risk to have a fall or accident if trying to reset a tripped RCBO than she would be if the bathroom light was not RCBO protected.
Having only removed items and replacing a light for a safer one is it ok not to fit the RCBO

It would be OK to do because you are only doing 'like for like' but I would still very much recommend fitting one. An RCBO is no more likely to trip in the event of a bulb failure than your current MCB

Also, under part F I'm not sure if you'd be alowed to board over the extractor, but I'm not certain about that

Thanks Rocker. Thought dying bulbs did not normally trip MCB's but will trip an RCBO.
Think I will quote to fit the RCBO anyway and recommend a replacement in-line fan to maintain compliance with building regs.

Replacing (like for like)a fixed equipment item such as a fan or shower is permitted without rcd ing (esc guidance)

However if the fan is not suitable (ip rating) or in zone 1 without rcd
Is the fan in Zone 1 or 2 ?

If your fitting an rcbo, the fan could be a mains voltage with IPx4 rating in zone 1 rather than removing and boxing in

The fan is in zone 1 directly above the bath. However it is ceiling mounted and I have not yet checked to see if above the 2.25m taking it outside the zones.
Fan quite a few years old and not sure of IP rating without taking it apart to see if indicated on any label etc. So going on previous survey and quote advice.
Both light fitting and pull switch also could be outside zones if ceiling above 2.25m. In which case nothing needs doing at all.
