Was at a job this week working in the loft fitting new downlighters to bathroom below. Loft is ultimately going to be boarded over. I used a Hager downlight JB at each fitting. Because of the loft insulation and as I had access above, it would have been ideal to fix the JBs to the joists, clear of the insulation, and overall a better install. But I couldn't because I knew the loft would be boarded over and the JBs would then only be accessible from below, and if I'd fixed them they wouldn't be able to be pulled through the holes at a later date. I suppose my point, or question, is that had I not known or 'forgotten' about the impending overboarding, I could have fixed them to the joists, happy in the knowledge that when I left the install, the JBs were accessible.

Does anyone relate to this, or am I just talking tripe?

i would leave them loose, accessible througfh the holes also would fit LEDs then no probs with itchy-poo stuffed in.for the lights. using line enclosures.

the hager downlight JB's, ie the J501 don't need securing as the cables are secured in place with cable clamps within the junction box.

obviously there not boarding over the downlights right ?

they are boarding over. that's why i would use LEDs... as regards fixing if JBs. they should be fixed, but if that makes them inaccessible, who's to say what's the correct method. personally i think they should be like a nice pair of t*ts. let ' em swing.

i thought regs stated JB's that don't incorporate cable clamps or a way of securing the cables must be secured to a surface ?

remember even LED's get warm, and the drivers will overheat still with no ventilation

so, use line enclosures, LEDs do generate some heat and should have some clearance around them, but not aas much as halogens, and far less risk of overheating and fire.

Those click CT 101. Are great for downlights.

OP- I think your being conscientious, otherwise just imagine the next guy who goes there and he can't get them out it would be swear central

But the Hager downlight JBs (J501) are NOT maintenance free.

This was only a theoretical post, I did state that I didn't fix the JBs. Thanks all for the input :)

I didn't say they all were. just overall i prefer the 803/804/501 range in comparison to those stupid line boxes that use cable ties :S

just look unprofessional IMO

i told it to the reps face as well during ELEX :p
