Hi Guys
Assessor picked me up today (he has to find something!) on not having a torque driver for CU stuff.

I'm going to buy one (forget the pros and cons). Can't seem to find a recent thread.

So, what's around suitable, adjustable and reliable for £50 or less, please? I'll stick it on my Christmas List!

Cheers

Pete

I had my Elecsa assessment about 6 weeks ago and asked the assessor whether they were planning on make these compulsory and he said at present it was a recommendation only.

Who said you need one?
And do they insist on that on their website, or is it a 'rogue' assessor, who thinks he knows more than the published requirements?

£50 or less? You are having a laugh. You need a variable torque driver, so will be paying £100+ new, £75ish 2nd hand, if you can get one - there are not many out there 2nd hand. There are lots of fixed torque drivers around at £25 2nd hand, but they are no good, as you'll need at least 3 different torque settings for differing fittings.

I believe its all to do with the cu manufacturers get out clause when their rubbish units go on fire."Oh well,it wasn't torqued up properly so not our liability." I probably will get one, don't think I will use it though.

You should be able to find the Wera and the Bahco torque drivers with just the hex fitting for under 35 quid. Then you need a range of hex drive screwdriver bits which are cheap.

Hi Guys
Thanks for your replies.

1. Reg 134.1.1 in BS 7671 makes the requirement to follow manufacturer's instructions

2. Wylex, Volex and I believe MK and Hager all give recommended torque values for their terminals

3. I'm willing to give a torque driver a try. If I'm then convinced that I'm a better judge of terminal tightness, then at least I've still got it to provide some arse cover!

4. Wiha do a VDE one for £75. Anyone used it?

Cheers

Pete
