Hello, just started out on my own, done a few jobs already. A mate has just bought a house and its wired in aluminium, so he has asked me to rewire, after speaking to a couple of electricians i know they said go for it and any advice needed they will gladly give me, its a terrace 2 up 2 down.

How would you start it and go on??

Disconnect old wiring, lift boards, remove all old kit, install new cables, wait for plasterer to finish, kick decorator off site, second fix, test and power up, collect payment, post certificate.

Wait for word-of-mouth to kick in (its free advertising, you know) and get busy.

The first part should take you a week (in total) if you are on your todd (maybe less if you are younger than me lol).

The second bit takes about 10 years :)

If he hasn't moved in its a easy job just like Phil said,
If hes having other quotes do the job at cost + ÂŁ600 for your self to get it. You should inform the labc (but I got away with it when I had my elecsa assessment then singed it off after) you will earn more money once your part P approved.

Do it one circuit at a time. If it's occupied territory you will need to rewire alongside the existing circuits, and then swap from old to new one circuit at a time in order to keep supplies running while you are working. If it's empty disconnect and rip all the old out before you start putting in new. Dont try and replace cableing like for like....forget whats already there and plan your new circuits to suit your self.

Do the lot in one go - room by room is hard work.

If the property is occupied do the upstairs lighting in one hit, then the downstairs, then the power circuits. Still hard work. I don't undertake occupied rewires as they are a headache.

Best of luck !

The property is a shell and my mate isnt moving in till everything done and he said i can take aslong as i need, he understands im early in my career so its good, i can make as much mess as i want ;)

Room by room sounds best.

I aint gettin paid loads to do it so not sure if to inform bc cause will they not charge alot to test?? I may just wait to get it passed by elecsa, plus my mate is a spark and he said he will do test after.

thanks

Its better to do circuit by curcuit not room to room you wont miss things.
Informing the BC looks good and only costs around ÂŁ150 as a one off, elesca may want to see that you have done this (I may have been lucky not to get asked)

Work top to bottom get the worst out the way first ie the loft! get a mate to help you and you'll have it done in a couple of hours or so then the power on the first floor and the downstairs lights at the same time then finish up with the ground floor and bonding and consumer unit last ( the best job last ).

I normally start on downstair ring then upstair ring then CCU, central heating, and put in a dedicated socket for their freezer without an RCD for obvious reasons then downstair lights, upstair lights smoke alarms x 2 min then finally CU connection then testing oh and dont forget the bonding

17th edition requires all circuits that are put into walls 50mm or less should be protected by RCD's there are exceptions for fixed appliances such as a freezer to have a dedicated non RCD socket it must be clearly marked for the purpose of use.
You will be using the 17th edtion dual rcd board?? and it makes sense to fit a dedicated RCBO for the shower room thus applying discrimination between circuits??
