There are switches in rooms that we don't know what they are for. they were here when we moved in.
Is there a simple way of finding out what they are for.

Welcome to the forum James73 - Where are these switches located?

PS - I assume you have tried them with no obvious result (I got to ask ;) )

Have you a photo you can upload - we may recognise them better, your description of a switch could apply to various electrical points like fused spurs, light switches etc.

How old is the property? what do the switches look like?
About 20 years. Switches with light and fuse like this only white plastic

if thesae are in a kitchen, above worktops, they could well be to isolate sockets for washing machines/dishwahers etc. the sockets will be low down behind , of close to, the appliances.

Or if they have no fuse in , and are distributed around the house they could be electric heating points that have had the storage heaters removed .
How many 'fuse boxes' do you have ?
If you have two there is a good chance that is what they are.

PS . misread the post about the fuse.

It could be any number of things, including a supply which was installed ready for some appliance which was never fitted or has been removed

or some areshole of a customer knocked the spark on his bill and so work wasn't completed.

he trying. knocked me down on price, then wanted an extra 10 downights fitting at no extra cost. this is on a few hundred cost job, and he's already had ÂŁ10,000 worth of block paving and fencing done. so he not short of money, just pleads poverty when it come to essential electrical work.

Ah, annoying, hopefully you can get away from that one sharpish, put it down to experience and get on to better jobs.
