Hello,

New to the forum, after spending loads of time reading up on these online training 'crash courses' i have decided that i am going to take the college route. I am just wondering if the 17th Edition Wiring Regulations BS7671 2381-01 L3 Certification is reconised qual? You can do this at St helens college as a part time course and the course takes 14 weeks to complete ( which on some threads on here say is too short)? Any information would be great.

Cheers

Good morning!

Glad to hear you're staying away from those awful Electrical Trainee 'courses'.

All sparks will need their wiring regs cert but for you, your main concern will be getting on the City and Guilds 2330 course. This is the biggie.

It would prob be best to start with the college at the basics. Then later on do the 17th. It's better doing the college route those crash courses just seemed ram you with info in the shortest time poss.

As above. The 17th Edition course you're talking about is just a formal qual saying you know the regs. It won't help you find work, or allow you to work as a spark. I know it is a quicker course and probably cheaper, but on its own it's actually useless.

The 2330 teaches the underlying electrical theory to help understand why circuits are designed as they are, i.e cables sizes, current carrying capacity, trip times for protective devices, the importance of earthing etc. If you do the 2330 it is to the 17th Edition regs anyway so I believe you don't actually need the 2381 until the regs are updated to the 18th Edition and then you just need to do an update course (although some employers might not understand this and so insist on a 2381 qualification).

If you have no electrical experience then this course will make no sense to you. Get on the 2330 course first, which will give the underlying knowledge then do the regs course later on.

Take this advice
Get in the college city guilds 2330 and make sure you sit at the front, you will do well as you want to better yourself. If anything you don't understand tel the tutor and let him explain until you do understand, the loosers and dropouts sit at the back.
Goodluck!

One thing that Sedgy didn't say is that a lot of us like helping out people who are just starting out in the trade so if you're still not getting it if your lecturer is hopeless (Believe me there's a lot of crap lecturers out there) don't be scared to come here and ask for help, but when you post up your question be sure to put what you think the answer is and why. That way you won't get bitten. Good luck mate:)

this year is the last run of the 2330, the course that is replacing it from september onwards is the city and guilds 2357 which will also include the nvq level 3 and am2 qualifications. also if you want to pm me for any advice your welcome mate, my first advice now will be to get yourself a job now as an electricians apprentice so that you can let the college know that you are working in the trade if you get to the stages of an interview with the college electrical staff or they will give your placement away to somebody who is working in the trade as an apprentice if your not.
