Hi
I'd like to find out how all you employed sparks are paid travel.
I have recently employed someone and want to make sure it's fair for us both.
He said he was paid overtime rate for anything over 30mins each way. From his home. I think il be out of business paying those sort of rates.
The JIB rates I have just found don't seem a lot, is that figure each way travelled?
He is supplies with s brand new can and fuel card so doesn't incur any travel costs.
What sort of travel allowances do you guys receive and are you happy with them?
Thanks

When I was employed at last place, I agreed I would travel half an hour on my own time then just normal time from then, overtime would only come into it if it was over the agreed normal hours. So half an hour of my time travelling in the morning, if I done say my allocated 8 hours of normal time and went onto overtime, I would be on overtime rate until I got home minus half an hour.

When we used to travel away we got normal rate until we went over our standard hours then it was into overtime, However I know a lot of firms who only pay half rate for travelling (especially if there are 2 drivers) as it is assumed they would split the driving.

as hellmouth said. first 30 mins unpaid is equivalent to travel from home to work. anything after that, like travel to site or from site to site should be at normal rate up till if you go over agreed single time rate into overtime rate. also, employer is entitled to charge employee for private mileage in a company vehicle.

I never knew the travel money was so good!

When I was employed a few yrs back we were paid inline with the JIB travel scheme, so 0-15 nothing 0-25 ÂŁx etc
If I pay him anything outside his 7.5 hr day as overtime at time x half, I could be paying him over ÂŁ20/hr to sit in traffic, seems crazy.

I'm talking working hours 8-4 he may leave 7-730 and get bAck anywhere from 430-530 occasionally 6 but it's mainly traffic. I'd say 50 miles max, occasionally up to 70-80

I'd say to him that you'll pay him after the first half hour of travel and up till the last half hour of travel home, an hour a day of his own time is fair imo.
