Hiya,

just trying to make a decision on whether or not to dive in to PV, I had to cancel MCS training 12 months ago and didn't get around to rescheduling - now wondering if it's worth it or not!

Putting all the tariff issues, financial incentives, schemes etc to one side, if i walk into one of my mainstream wholesalers and buy the panels and bits to install a 4kW system on my south facing roof, how much would it cost me roughly?

4kw scrimp on everything £4700 and you have the cheap and nasty system to install but no one in thier right mind would want to own it for 25 years ( the special south facing roof panels are the same price as the north facing ones ) assuming you get you vat back

So what would it be for something more 'normal' not cheap and nasty?

if its for yourself buy some big name brands spend 7 k you still have a super cheap system as the fitting and warantee done by yourself at least it wont end up in the bin in 10 years time

I think it is 7k bits plus vat, add in the labour scaffold insurance wear and tear then a business has to make a profit else the warantee isnt worth anything so all but the feeble minded can work out 10k for a 4kw system isnt going to get them a top quality product with a solid company guarantee ,

It's up to you on weather you think it will be worth getting into the solar game or not , all i can say is our MCS ticket ran out in December , we will be renewing it in a few months but only because it will be needed to run along side another technology we are looking to get in to !
And this is tacking account that we already have very potential orders of over 70kw waiting to go ( if the government could get around to giving us all some bloody clarity on the job !) that will have to be passed on to other fitters if a commercially viable solar industry is still left in the end !

I was due a renewal inspection in September and still not heard anything, I even chased them to let them know and was told theyd be in contact, if they contact me in the next week or so I am going to palm them off for at least a month until things are more clear, if the energy rating is introduced for future installs then PV will be a non starter from April, hold on to your money until things are clearer.

In my view it's already an industry with an over supply of installers. If there's a slump in interest when the government takes a break from meddling with the FiT scheme, that will only get worse. I also suggest keeping your cash in your pocket until there has been a period of stability...i.e. at least six months after the current FiT fiasco.
