Just been to a job wants cu changed, bit old, no, lot old and found spike in porch and pme incomer, do I need to leave both or just go with pme supply

Sounds like it used to be a TT then got upgraded DNO wont touch earth rod as its not their property is the earth rod still connected to the CU or could that be an earth for something else at the property.

Hi.

Nothing wrong with re-connecting the electrode along with the PME, a good thing IMO as if the supply neutral goes open circuit then at least there will still be an earth path via the rod.

yes earth from tt spike is still connected to cu, as I agree a lot of bungalows down here started out life as tt interesting the pme connection is from an overhead supply, all the ones i have done befor have come underground, must be close to the sub

Helow mate, I take it by spike you mean earth rod, and you also have a PME system. Belt and braces is leave the spike in as well...... This was advice yesterday from SSE contracting who were moving a meter to an outside position for me. I had upgraded the earth to 16 mil as well, they would of been happy with it stayng as a ten. I am a new electrician and I am currently researching this very issue, but that was from the experts. Good luck.

Thanks for that, thought it would be ok to leave, as said belt and braces, see we have a Isle of Wight person on board just a question have you managed to get any resealing stickers from SSE?

I went down to my local depot at poole and they got them there, only allowed 5 without postcodes but if doing mutliple work for say council you can get as many as u want

As the others say an additional electrode no problem, just wanted to say about the overhead bit, dont forget PME was originally introduced sepcifically to give customers on overheads a main earth if they wanted it, later the supply companies realised they could save a lot of cost by using it underground and so here we are PME land
