Two Way Lighting

Had another question about lighting this time as it seems to be what I struggle to get my head around the most and the book is very simplistic.

I came across a configuration today which I didn't think would work but it does and i just wondered what possible combinations there are? and what do you find the easiest way of getting your head around it all?

Basically the one I came across was


(Upstairs Permanent live L1) to (L2 Downstairs)
(Upstairs Switched live L2) to (L1 Downstairs)
Common to Common
A little strange I don't know why they didn't just connect L1 to L1 and L2 to L2 rather then it being L1 to L2 but works?

If I'm reading this right it would work all the same, although one of the switches will be in the on position when the lights are out. The old adage works best to get your head around things - when in doubt, draw it out. A picture paints 1000 words
