Typically do employers take on people who do the short course, 6 months but level 3 C&G qualified in electrics

Hi guys,

I’m currently serving in the army, but I’ll be leaving next year. I’m looking at doing a 6 month course at a center called trade skills 4 you in Gatwick, to get me C&G level 3 qualified in electrics. My question is, would any employers typically take on someone with only 6 months experience in the trade?

Would the 6 month course give you 6 months work experience or 6 months in a classroom ?

What employers are generally looking for are electricians graded to JIB standards or with equivalent qualifications. This is to NVQ3 level. They also look for site experience and the ability to do the job.

With a c&g level 3 and no experience you'd be quite well trained in the classroom but it would be down to the employer to determine how much use you'd be on site.

The 6 months is classroom based and I’ll be trained as an electricians mate. Whilst I am with a company I will be looking to do my NVQ level 3. I know employers want experience but the only way I know to get that is through an apprenticeship. Which will be a pay cut. Do you know the best route to get NVQ level 3?

The NVQ3 is to be done in employment as it is a record of experience in practical tasks.

If your service has been on say REME then you could use RPL routes for AM2 etc, obviously if your trade was something other then you'll still have transferable skills but not quite as handy as a electrotechnical orientated trade.

You can do a level 3 qualification in the wiring regulations which proves your ability to find your way around the book, or you could do a level 3 qualification in the science and underpinning knowledge of electrical installation work.

They are both level 3 qualifications but one is far more attractive to employers than the other.

A lot of these courses will give you the qualifications that are normally considered to be additional to a core qualification rather than giving you the core qualification.

How longed have you served for and what trade are you?
If you’ve done long enough to be entitled to the resettlement package then CTP run a course which will help you get some qualifications and may save you some money in the long run.
