Hi all
Can anybody give me any info on a generator to act as a u.p.s . A client of ours currently has a system in place on batteries which lasts 20 mins when power fails.
They do receive power cuts quite often and they want a system in place which will last a lot longer to run their servers.
Now they are looking down the route of fitting a generator. Obviously this will have to be located outside. Does it require an enclosure? Do they require maintenance? How does the engine automatically fire up? Is it easy enough to switch over from the old u.p.s?
Any input will be helpful and I can then look up advanced info.
Many thanks

Even with a Generator you still need a UPS to fill the gap between the power loss and start of local generation.

Yes they need maintenance, same as UPS do, in fact most things need maintenance.

Autostart / changeover would be essential for server support.

Based on the questions asked, you need onsite help from someone more expert in these systems to design and spec.

What you need is a no break set up, Mains, Generator and UPs, ie On line UPs, generator with Phase failure set up.
Mains feed the load through the UPs (On line), mains fail, Genset starts up reaches the set parameters feeds through the UPs to load.
Mains come back Genset stops, UPS still supplying load via mains. Hence no break, I think that's how I used to install them.

You're out of your depth here.

Get an electrician with relevant experience to carry out the work. This sort of stuff isn't the sort of stuff to be practicing on.

There's also certain combinations of generator and UPS that operate well together and certain combinations that don't. I'd also suggest you seek assistance on the design and specification of an installation like this because it's a very costly thing when there's a mistake or oversight at the design stage.

You, or rather your client, really do need to employ the services of a specialist company that are well versed in providing such systems. The generator also needs to be selected based on it's characteristics, it's not just a case of purchasing a unit with a suitable KVA/KW rating.... Everything has to literary work seamlessly in both directions or your in for world of financial grief!!...

I could go on and on, but unless you understand the system requirements it'll be pointless....
