Hi all
I have just been told by a tricky desiger that the structured cabling I have installed throughout the years has not been properly commissioned as I have no structured cabling accreditation

is he right?

Is there any National acreditation for structured cabling? I am aware that many manufacturers carry out courses and provide acreditation so that warranties etc can be provided!

Im am right in saying that as I am an NICEIC approved contractor assessed to BS7671 wiring regulation that the structure cabling should form part of this!

may I add that no warranties were previously provided and that all system were tested to ensure they were in working order.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts on this

data cables dont fall into bs7671. maybe except for not sharing same space with mains wiring.
theres no big accreditation, if particular client have some special requirements they should
check them with you before giving you the job, not mess up afterwards.
or mr designer is talking bs

Mr desiger has messed up and hasn't included this detail in his specification and has now put it back to me that he can't believe I'm not an accredited installer and has labelled me an embarrassment! ( lol his words) I couldnt argue with him as Wasnt not 100% sure! But I cant find any national accreditation / qualification available. !!! If there is no mention of warranties to be provided in the spec I don't see the relevance of the manufacturer accreditation

Networking cables DO fall under BS7671 !
Been part of the Niceic makes no difference! Its just a ÂŁ500 logo.
When testing and producing certs for your installed network how are you testing them? Last time I looked the testers were ÂŁ4K-6K
Below is a link to a course with qualifications.

National accreditation i'm not sure about, I would have to find out.

no they dont, only reference i can find is to supliers network not data network.

bs7671 covers power not data

I don't have the time for the full ins & outs but lets start with
BGB (as you will have a copy) page 14 SCOPE, 110.1.2 (v) in building listed in 110.1.1
Then we have 110.1.3
The list goes on & on & on & if I was to look in BSEN 50174 there would be a reference to make sure BS7671 is also followed.

that reg covers control cable etc and they dont need testing to comply with reg.

sounds like designer has coked it up and is looking for a scapegoat. face the sod down. stand up for yourself. if necessary, a sharp punch to his nose might make him see reason.

Don't seem to think there is any accreditation required.
what I've seen is the likes of hellerman and other manufacturers offering 20 year warranties on certified jobs using their products and with their specific product training.
you also have to use a cable ceritifier on their list of approved testers.

I'm still in the dark with this one! Can't seem to get a yes or no answer
NICEIC & SafeSpark weren't able to give me an answer either

I'd love to have something to through in this designers face!!

is it acceptable or not for an electrician to install / terminate cat 6/5 cabling without any additional accreditation

Yes, but designer/customer is asking you to certify that the installed cable etc. will perform to the given network standards.
When you have tested you can then issue documents stating it will perform as expected.

no need, 1gbps is a theoretical max of 128MB/s

10gbps theoretical max is 1.28GB max.

most network ports are 10/100mbps

1gbps ports are not always available on new products and 10gbps ports are very expensive.

Hi all
I have a guy does installs ect for data ect they issue a print out of tests results on their stuff, as we had an office job to do in town & looked like we may have needed his service.
From what he mentioned it would list the cables as tested, length of cable correct pairing of cables & how much transmission they would handle. Also would be there 25 year warranty if all equipment was say nexans. But the tester he uses was expensive. May be this is type of ticket your surveyor needs. We put in a separate price for the above service on the office fit out this then covered us as they did not require but had they wanted we could offer the service & there was the cost, may be able to look his number up if that would help?
