hi all, very green on electrics, hope someone can clear my query up, my mother has had a whirlpool bath fitted but im not sure about the electrics. the fitter has wired the pump directly to a circuit breaker which is then wired to a mains socket about 50mm away all outside the bathroom, is this the correct method of wiring for this bath, any advice appreciated.

im asuming the RCD is the plug in type , not realy the best way , so some one could un plug the RCD and plug the pump into the socket which may not be RCD protected , the wirl pool bath should be connected via a fused spure that is protected by an RCD , this way the re is no chance of the RCD being removed , All circuits within a bathroom should be protected by an RCD also ant work carried out in a bathroom is notifiable , the pump is also a fixed appliance and should have a suitable supply for its purpose

Hi Chris , would he need a cert if he added basically an extension to the pump and plugged it in . personalyy he should and notify it but an awful quick way of going about it

hey, i wouldnt have said he would need a certificate for this work as it sounds like its just plugged in.

The proper way to go about it would probable be to take a spur of the ring main and into the bath as this provides a safe means of isolation.

(im a 2nd year apprentice btw so feel free to correct me on this =P)

Thats the bit I was looking at.

ah ok so im guessing your mums house hasnt been re-wired for a few years so is still using old re-wirable fuses so i can see where the fitter is coming from and playing it safe by wiring it into an RCD unit but i think it would have been ok just to wire it into a spur. The way hes done it is ok but maybe unnecessary.

if the house has rewireable fuse and as he has come off the back of a socket yes it does need an RCD and its notifable and a Minor certificate issued , this should have been installed to a fused spur outside the bathroom and should have been rcd protected by an RCD fused spur ,in all fairness he has put an RCD socket im assuming under the bath ,as it stands how are you able to isolate the pump with out removing the bath panel

just got off phone with my mum, she verified that a rccb with a test switch is fitted alongside the 13A socket this is what i remember when i looked but i thought it was an rcd, but the instruction say from pump to rccb via 13A ring main, which is correct, and the house is only 10years old.
