Hi guys, new to the forum.

I qualified in 1988 with City & Guilds Electrical Installation Parts 1 & 2 15th Edition followed by both ONC & HNC in Electrical & Electronic Engineering and then finally a BEng in Electronic & Computer Engineering, I became a Chartered Electrical Engineer (IEE) in 1999 but let it slip when I didn't keep up with the subs after I emigrated to Australia (I'm back now).

Having spent nearly 30 years on the Computer side of things I've now decided to again try my hand at being an electrician (I miss those day's), so I have a few questions if I may ask.

(1) What course or training would I need to update from the 15th edition to the latest 18th edition and roughly what would be the cost and length of course?

(2) I plan to specialize in the EV and Solar Panel installation sectors, would I need any additional training for these?

(3) Obviously it's too late to be Chartered again (IEE long gone I believe) without first reapplying and going through the whole application process, so what is the best professional organization to join, are they generally all the same?

Thanks.

I would start by doing a BS7671 amendment 2 course then a solar and ev charging course , if you intend on completing any notifiable work then enquire with NiCEIC or napit to check if you will need any other qualifications

Thanks for both your help.

I did in the end contact Tradeskills4u who advised the following.

For those updating from the 16th or in my case the 15th Edition the course to take is the C&G 2382-22 Requirements for Electrical Installations BS7671: 2018 (2382-18) 18th Edition Amendment 2 (Level 3) which costs ÂŁ499 and lasts 3 days, if you updating from the 17th Edition I believe it's a much shorter and cheaper course.

They also recommended the C&G 2392-10 Inspection & Testing Course (Initial Domestic) (Level 2) ÂŁ745 6 days.

For the EV courses, it's either C&G 2921-31 Domestic & Commercial EV Charging Installation (Level 3) ÂŁ395 3 days or the C&G 2919-02 Domestic EV Course (Level 3) ÂŁ700 4 days, I'm not sure what the difference is between them.

For the Solar courses, it's the BPEC Solar Photovoltaic Systems Course (This qualification must be renewed every 5 years - why?) ÂŁ720 5 days and the BPEC 0059 Introduction to Electrical Energy Storage Systems (EESS) ÂŁ530 2 days.

Plus there's a load of books to buy including the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations Book at ÂŁ89, a lot's changed since my day.

I'm sure I could get it a lot cheaper shopping around. I hope that's helped others in a similar situation.
