question a mate of mine who has a few houses, has just had an eicr carried out due to change of occupancy and the electrician has said the earth to gas and water wants up grading to 10mm . problem is the whole house as laminated flooring which posses a big problem for him he tells me . the earthing to water and gas looks to me 4mm but when i carried out an r2 test the reading i got was 0.04 end to end .so in theory does he really need to lift the flooring.

is it TNC-S? if so 10mm would be required on a new install and an upgrade recommended on existing install. however, if the existing bonding cables are in good condition with no signs of thermal damage, and your readings are as you stated, then it's a C3 and can be left as is.

Why not? The minimum size is 6mm in the regulations with no mention of any allowance for smaller if the resistance is a certain value, therefore the resistance of a main bond smaller than 6mm is irrelevant.

Unless you have a particularly long run and go over the 0.05 Ohms. Daz

The 0.05 Ohm recommended maximum. It was a tongue in cheek comment - don't take it too seriously! I'll put a smiley on next time :) Daz
