I'm using an electric chainsaw every time i start it all the lights dim. Which i expect, but in the consumer unit the mcb i believe makes a slight clicking sound is this normal. Its running on an 16a mcb no rings in the house all radials. Is this clicking noise normal? I've never heard this before. Its only when you start the machine. and quite faint.

It probably once upon a time fed the TV / Video circuit and watched too many horror films. That's not a 'click', more it's little knees knocking together in fright.

try the saw on a different circuit, if no clicking, could be the 1st MCB is a bit fragile and needs replacing. bit like me after a good session on the ale.

As a serious answer, if you're in doubt about it, for the sake of ÂŁ2-ÂŁ3 and five minutes, just swap it for a new one - LIKE FOR LIKE, though!

My guess would be that it's some sort of inductive / back emf issue, but wouldn't like to guess any more! It could actually be that these things make small noises under many different situations but no-one ever gets to hear them.

If so, if you don't get to hear it, did it actually make a noise???!
