Hi, has anyone ever used or come accross a mounting structure for modules to be fixed vertically on the side a wall? Only for 12 panels in 2 rows of 6 portrait on the side of a school. We normally use schuco for everything but they dont have one.

(Just want to add "great forum", everyone who contributes is a real credit to their profession, keep up the good work! thank you)

I has a similar query last month and spoke to a number of manufacturers including Schletter, K2. Schletter claim to have a vertical mounting system and sent me a quote through but no one at Schletter UK could tell me how to fix the system to the wall - with hooks, drill the profile directly in etc? I am still waiting for a call/email back from them after 2 weeks so I am not impressed with their service. K2 (through Selecta Solar) don't do a bespoke vertical mounting system but said that their standard system can be used, I found Selecta very useful.

I also spoke to Romag as I remembered seeing at Eco build that they had some examples of vertical mounted systems. They too used Schletter but had their own hooks made for them which doesn't really make it viable for small systems like this.

Let me know how you get on, our customer isn't going ahead so i have not progressed anything but would be interested to know what you go with.

just use the schuco metal roof mounting brackets that slide in to the rails secured with decent fixings into the brickwork at regular intervals, ensuring the fixing points are relatively central to the bricks.

if you want to you could then do cruciform for landscape, so you end up with the panels being supported from the bottom and top instead of the sides, and make sure you use anti-slide fixings at the bottom of each rail.

The rails and brackets and clips should be capable of taking it, it's then just a matter of the fixings, which is basic building work, and if in doubt just add some extra fixing points as they're about a quid each.

I know it's not my thread but thanks for that! I take it that you have done an install like this, just out of interest - how did you do the wind load calcs? This is something else that I was pondering when the customer first expressed an interest.

no, we've not actually done it, but did work up a quote for an install based on this.

For the calcs, I'd think you'd just need to know the maximum point loading and total loading for a brick wall, and ensure you stay under the total loading and have more than enough fixing points to be comfortably within the point loading side of things.

I'm not a structural engineer though, so the answer to your question would be - consult a structural engineer and get a letter from them saying it'll be reet.

Hi, thanks to everyone for their input. After making a phone call to Tritec they came to our offices to explain their system and were very helpful, i think we'll probably go with them. The architect has now indicated that he wants the panles landscape, which im a lot happier doing so fingers crossed all will be well.
Thanks again .......... now off to find some red plugs & 1 x 8's :wink5:
