Being looking at sizing Cable for a new Cooker . It is a Beast with a manufacturesrs spec of 17.4 KW. Was applying diversity to this ie 10amps plus 30% etc ( no 5 amp).

Just got me thinking that after the diversity the answer is 29.7 Amps down from 75.6amps. Was diversity designed to allow for large cookers or are the regs need updating as manufactures build even bigger appliances.

Does Diversity of 30% work on such Large Cookers and what happens when the Client has all the rings and Oven on ( eg Xmas Lunch their words not mine).

I am adding in the 5 amps ( though not using socket outlet) to get Cable and Protection size and definitly 10mm cable

Diversity will work on all cookers because they are only on max current demand for a relatively short time. Once they have reached the set temp they will be constantly switching off as they are just working to maintain the pre-set temp. Just because it is set on max temp does not mean it will be on max load.

be carefull in bigger installations shops, hotels etc. but yes standard cooker diversity will work on all domestic installations no matter what full load the applience. hold your nerve

Normally the diversity given in the Reg's is to 15KW, but will still work to much higher ratings, just need to adjust cable size and MCB to the diversified rating. Very rarely will a domestic cooker be used anywhere near it's full capacity. Many manufactures still quote ''connected'' KW ratings, and for ovens that can be very misleading, as some of those elements can't be operated at the same time. eg... Grill and main oven elements!!

If the MCB trips at xmas she who must be obeyed is going to be mad and you will be in it. Any other day of the year the diversification will work perfectly. I'd give it a bit more.

Why did she want a cooker that big?
